Reforest Lebanon
Reforest Lebanon is a non-profit, non-governmental organization registered at the ministry of interior and municipalities (notification no. 1875). Reforest Lebanon is dedicated towards preserving the green identity and the unique forest heritage of Lebanon in the deserted Middle East region.
Reforest Lebanon was founded in cooperation with the Gibran Academy of Arts. It is known that the most powerful images in Gibran’s writings were borrowed from the nature of Lebanon. It's that wild green nature of Lebanon, 100 years ago, which coloured the thoughts of Gibran, the most influencial Lebanese-American writer today. Gibran stressed the sanctity of nature and our duty to protect and ennoble it.
The nature of Lebanon fascinated Gibran’s mind and triggered his imagination: the ancient Cedars, the magnificent valley of Qadisha, the awe-inspiring mountains of Sannin and Famm al-Mizab. These were the scenes that first fired the mind of Gibran. After his emigration to America at the age of 11, Lebanon became the object of his longing and a constant source of his inspiration:
… and I remember, too, the beautiful spot in North Lebanon. Every time I close my eyes I see those valleys full of magic and dignity and those mountains covered with glory and greatness trying to reach the sky.
Who among you dare to say, "When I die I leave my country little better than when I was born"?
Who among you dare to say, "My life was a drop of blood in the veins of Lebanon, a tear in his eyes or a smile upon his lips"?
... are you a politician asking what your country can do for you, or a zealous one asking what you can do for your country? Gibran Khalil Gibran (1883-1931)
Reforest Lebanon initiated different awareness-raising campaigns and reforestation projects across the country, targeting the preservation of our green forests, one of Lebanon’s most important natural assets in the region.
Our goals encompass:
- Reforest those areas of Lebanon which were partially or completely and irreversibly deteriorated due to environmental or human factors.
- Grow new forests (Cedrus Libani, Pine, Oak, evergreen almost extinct Cypress) in cooperation with the local communities and municipalities.
- Maintain existing forests and work with specialized communities to prevent forest illnesses and abuses (declare endangered forests as natural reserves).
- Establish new nurseries in order to ensure sustainable forest growth.
- Spread awareness about the importance of forests in the absorption of green house gases, prevention of desertification, and reduction of air pollution.
- Build artificial lakes and water reservoirs to irrigate newly grown forests.
- Plant trees in the cities and along the Lebanese coast in order to reduce city pollution and protect the coastal line natural beauty.
- Organize campaigns to clean the garbage thrown in the forests and along the coastal line.
